Welcome to our Feminist Fiction Reading Group! A place discover an array of titles and themes by female authors selected each month by Eleanor. From a feminist perspective we will be reading and discussing all sorts of works by female authors from forgotten classics to contemporary literary fiction.

The book for our first meeting will be Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God. Despite being met with harsh criticisms when it was first published in 1937, this deeply moving novel is now acclaimed as one of the great American classics of the twentieth century.

There’s no need to prepare or pressure to contribute at all - just bring your lovely self - but do feel free to mention a particular passage or character that you enjoyed during your reading.

Each entry place costs £5, fully redeemable as a voucher towards a copy of the book. We hope you’ll join us for some great conversation, and perhaps some baked goods

Now, women forget all those things they don’t want to remember and remember everything they don’t want to forget. The dream is the truth.

When, at sixteen, Janie is caught kissing shiftless Johnny Taylor, her grandmother swiftly marries her off to an old man with sixty acres. Janie endures two stifling marriages before meeting the man of her dreams - who offers not diamonds, but a packet of flowering seeds. Rediscovered and championed by Alice Walker in the 1970s, Hurston’s lyrical novel of self-discovery is now acclaimed as one of the greatest American classics of the twentieth century.
