The History of York: Susan Major for Blossom Street

Blossom Street: the Royal entrance to York

Most of our kings and queens have entered York through the Micklegate Bar from Blossom Street. They were greeted by the Lord Mayor and the Sheriff’s Army, a tradition retained today. But the street has played a noteworthy role in many other historic scenes and events.

Local author Dr Susan Major will be talking about her latest book from Clements Hall Local History Group in York. This is the seventh in their series of popular award-winning books about areas of York.

It has always been an important route in and out of the city to the south and west. During the War of the Roses after the Battle of Towton in 1461 and later in the mid-17th century, after Civil War battles, it was the setting for the passage of thousands of wounded and dying soldiers.

This beautifully illustrated book traces the street’s history, building by building, with a number of significant historic examples. The Bar Convent is the oldest living convent in the UK and one of the oldest schools for girls in the country. The Odeon Cinema dates from 1937, a classic and distinctive example of Odeon Art Deco design, still there as the Everyman. The Forsselius building, now a hotel, is another Art Deco example.

Susan will be highlighting examples of significant people living here over the last two hundred years, some reflecting railways and chocolate for example. The history of Blossom Street is full of interesting stories and fascinating detail, and this thoroughly researched book is a gem.
