To kick-start the new year, we are launching another new reading group: Queer Fiction! With Sanna as our guide, we will be immersing ourselves in a range of LGBTQIA+ fiction, both classic and contemporary.
For the first three monthly meetings, we’ll be looking at the three books listed below:
Tuesday, March 4th - Devotion by Hannah Kent
Monday, April 7th - Maurice by E.M. Forster
Monday, May 5th - Welcome to Dorley Hall by Alyson Greaves
There’s no need to prepare but if you feel like it, please feel free to mention a passage or character you particularly liked (or disliked!) from the novel over the course of the evening.
For our first meeting, we will be reading Devotion by Hannah Kent (2021).
Devotion is a lyrical and haunting novel centered around the intense and passionate relationship between the protagonist, Hanne, and her close friend, Thea. Hanne is often at odds with the restrictive religious expectations placed on her by her devout father. Her bond with Thea, which blossoms into a profound love, becomes a source of solace and rebellion.
As Hanne navigates the pressures of faith, family, and forbidden desire, she and Thea make a daring escape to Australia, hoping to forge new lives free from the constraints of their past. However, their journey is fraught with challenges, including the brutal landscape of the Australian outback, personal sacrifice, and the consequences of their love.
