Welcome to the wonderful Feminist Fiction Reading Group! A place to discover and enjoy a range of titles and themes lovingly hand picked by Mary. Woven together by feminist perspectives and critique, we will be discussing everything from unsung classics to contemporary literary fiction.
One of the finest writers of today, in many ways both genre defining and defying, it would be a disservice to the realm of feminist fiction if we were to not include a Winterson novel. Join me in reading Written on the Body, a witty and masterful tale written in 1993 that takes the reader on a beguiling and defying exploration of love and its physical forms. Author of Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, Jeanette Winterson's clear and powerful voice so brilliantly captures passion and tenderness alike.
In a quiet English suburb, a love affair ignites. For our nameless narrator, Louise is the last in a long line of explosive passions, but the first to have broken their heart. With Louise's husband, Elgin, blocking love's course, their affair is doomed to unravel - until, that is, a terrible choice must be made.
'This book is a deep, sensual plunge, a worship of the body, inside and out' The Times
There’s no need to prepare or pressure to contribute at all - just bring your lovely self - but do feel free to mention a particular passage or character that you enjoyed during your reading.
Each entry place costs £5, fully redeemable as a voucher towards a copy of the book. We hope you’ll join us for some great conversation, and perhaps some themed baked goods!
