The monthly Indie Press Reading Group series aims to highlight brilliant novelists, essayists and poets from some of the most prolific UK independent publishers. In April, we'll talk about Jacqueline Rose's newly reissued essay work, Women in Dark Times, published by Fitzcarraldo Editions.
‘A surfeit of elegance and intelligence.’
— Ali Smith
‘One of the most original and intellectually sophisticated minds at work today.’
— Eimear McBride
Women in Dark Times begins with revolutionary socialist Rosa Luxemburg, German-Jewish painter Charlotte Salomon and film icon Marilyn Monroe. The story of these women blazes a trail across some of the defining features of the twentieth century: revolution, totalitarianism and the American dream. Evoking the subterranean depths of history and the human mind that dominant political vocabularies refuse to face, pioneering critic and public intellectual Jacqueline Rose forges a new feminist language. She celebrates contemporary artists whose work grows out of an unflinching engagement with dark parts of the modern world. Women in Dark Times offers a template for a scandalous feminism, confronting all that is recalcitrant and unsettling in the struggle for a better world.
